6 years nursing experience
1. How has your time been at Barcaldine?
I’ve been really enjoying it! There is a really friendly community feel to the town, and the hospital and staff are great.
It’s pretty hot most days but having a pool right outside my place is great after finishing my shift!
2. What have you got up to in Queensland?
I was able to spend a week in Toowoomba to MC my buddy’s wedding, which was so much fun, before flying up to Barcaldine. Toowoomba is such a nice city.
After Barcaldine I’m taking a week off and heading to the Blue mountains – cannot wait!
3. What do you enjoy most about the travel nurse lifestyle?
I love the sense of adventure and flexibility it allows me. The ability to travel, see new places, meet so many nice people and do fun things while I work.
It feels like a working holiday, and I feel really lucky to be able to do it.
4. You are currently on your 7th placement with us – what has been the highlight of working with Affinity so far?
I really enjoyed going out on ambulance retrievals to remote indigenous communities in the Kimberley. It felt very special, and not an experience most people would get to have.
And of course, making quality friendships with people all over Australia.
5. You have taken many beautiful photos – do you have a favourite shot? What’s the story behind it?
There is a shot of me and two mates that I took in the Kimberley. We got up early and went hiking at sunrise then all had breakfast afterwards.
The actual shot is a little blurry, but its connected to a great memory. Had some of the best conversations I’ve had with those two guys.
6. What advice would you tell other Nurses who want to do travel nursing?
The reality of dropping into a new hospital and finding your feet isn’t as daunting as it sounds. Forms might be a different colour and the way they set things up may be different, but the fundamentals are always the same.
I’ve never walked into a hospital where the people weren’t welcoming and helpful. Just smile and be friendly. Chances are you already have enough experience and knowledge to start, you just have to jump in and give it a go, to realise that you were always ready *cringe*.
