1. How has your time been at Cairns?
The hospital is great. I have found the work in ED interesting, and I am constantly learning and seeing new things. I am really enjoying the warm weather, having lived in Canberra, Melbourne and London – winter in Cairns is a lovely change!
2. What have you got up to in Queensland?
I have been to Green Island on the reef, explored the Atherton Tablelands and swam in some of the waterfalls around there. I have been to Kuranda and some of the local Cairns swimming holes, rainforests and waterfalls. I am planning to explore the Daintree and Cape Tribulation next.
3. What do you enjoy most about the travel nurse lifestyle?
I love the ability to get to know a place really well and find all the local hidden gems. I feel lucky to have a job that can take me to some incredible places, while broadening and consolidating my nursing skills. And I’ve met some absolutely wonderful people who will be friends for life.
4. You are currently on your 3rd placement with us – what has been the highlight of
working with Affinity so far?
Affinity has been great, and my placement specialist Katie has been fantastic in finding me contracts that are suitable for me in what I want to experience and achieve from each placement. Everything is organised really well, making moving around the country a smooth journey so there’s more time to relax and start the next adventure!
I’ve always wanted to explore WA so when a job came up in Albany it was a great way to get over there and see our south-western coastline. The beaches over there are some of the most beautiful in the world. I also lived with the most fabulous nurses and we just had so much fun! It was also a great opportunity to experience the benefits and challenges of working in a regional hospital.
5. You have taken many beautiful photos – do you have a favourite shot? What’s the story behind it?
This is a photo from the end of my first contract in Tasmania. A few of us went down to Strahan and splashed out on the premium deck for the Gordon River Cruise. We spent the day laughing, eating, drinking, and taking in the beautiful scenery and exploring. It is one of the most fun and memorable days I have ever had, spent with amazing friends I met in Burnie.
6. What advice would you tell other Nurses who want to do travel nursing?
Give it a go! It’s such a great way to meet new people, get to know different places, save some money and learn a lot about yourself and your abilities. It’s important to be open minded, embrace change, and go with the flow because everywhere is different so there is always the opportunity to learn something new.
