1. How long have you been nursing for?

I have been nursing for over 6 years (Endorsed Enrolled Nurse and Registered Nurse) combined.

2. How was your time at the Royal Hobart Hospital?

My time at the Royal Hobart Hospital was a truly wonderful experience. The support and resources available were exceptional, and everyone was incredibly welcoming and great to work with. Being part of the pool gave me the opportunity to work across various medical, surgical, rehab, and palliative wards, and I even had the chance to serve as a clinical resource nurse. This allowed me to experience different areas of care and gain valuable insights from various specialties.

The presence of agency nurses on the floor was incredibly helpful—they knew exactly what it felt like to be new in an environment, so they were always supportive, looking out for one another, and ready to lend a hand when needed. They were particularly helpful during busy shifts, offering assistance whenever it got hectic.

I vividly remember my first solo shift on the cardiac ward. It was a busy day, and I didn’t have access to the medtaskers or fully know the routine of the ward. However, the nurses on the floor were incredibly supportive. The float nurses helped me with medications, and my buddy nurse—an agency nurse—assisted me with nursing tasks, ensured I took my breaks, and even went out of her way to buy me a coffee during the hectic shift. The regular staff on the floor were equally welcoming, and I felt genuinely supported by everyone.

There were also plenty of resources available, such as orderlies, float nurses, and clinical resource nurses, who assisted with patient care. Additionally, clinical coaches were available if I needed help with more complex care situations. All in all, I felt like I was part of the team and never an outsider.

3. What do you enjoy most about the travel nurse lifestyle?

What I enjoy most about the travel nurse lifestyle is the perfect balance of adventure, personal growth, and career development. It offers the freedom to explore new places, meet diverse people, and immerse myself in different cultures, all while doing the work I love. The ability to take time off between shifts to explore the state I’m in is a huge perk—it’s a great way to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

The lifestyle has also made me more independent. I’ve learned so much about myself by stepping away from the chaos of daily life and finding time for the things I truly enjoy. With guaranteed shifts and accommodations usually close to the hospital, I have plenty of downtime to reflect, go for walks, and unwind after a busy shift.

Travel nursing pushes me out of my comfort zone, allowing me to grow both personally and professionally. Each new assignment offers fresh learning opportunities and challenges that keep my career dynamic and fulfilling. I also gain new skills, meet new friends, and experience different cultures, foods, cities, and nature along the way. For me, it’s about more than just work; it’s a chance to feel a sense of accomplishment, connect with people from all walks of life, and keep evolving as both a nurse and an individual.

4. You’ve done 2 placements with us so far – what has been the highlight of working with Affinity?

Working with Affinity has been such a great experience, and I’ve felt truly supported every step of the way. From the moment I applied, I’ve been treated like a valued member of the team. Katie, my placement specialist, has been exceptional—she always puts my needs first and works hard to find contracts that align with my goals and preferred locations.

The whole Affinity team, from travel and credentialing to admin staff, has been so approachable and accommodating. Whether I’m reaching out by phone or email, everyone is always available to chat, answer my questions, and offer support. I really feel respected and cared for in every interaction, and it’s clear that everyone at Affinity genuinely wants the best experience for me. I can tell they’re working behind the scenes to make sure everything runs smoothly, and that support has made all the difference. I took the Spirit of Tasmania; the process to get to Hobart and come back was incredibly easy. Affinity organized all the itinerary for me and were very accommodating of my needs.

During my contracts, Affinity makes sure my accommodation is hassle-free, and they regularly check in to see how everything’s going. I’ve never felt like I’m on my own—whether it’s making sure my payments are correct or organizing travel, they’ve taken care of it all without me having to chase anything down. I really appreciate how responsive and detail-oriented the team is.

I also love that Affinity actively seeks feedback to improve their services. They genuinely care about making sure I’m happy with everything, and it’s clear they’re always looking for ways to make my experience even better.

5. Have you taken some photos to document your travels, and do you have a favourite shot? What’s the story behind it?

On my days off I booked a trip from Trip Advisor and went to explore some of the best mustgo places in Hobart. Cascade Brewery was one of them where you get to take a tour of the wine factory in a group and later sit back and relax with the view and the delicious food.

It was a whole day trip where I got to experience an exclusive private cheese and beer breakfast experience at Bruny Island Cheese Company; went to the iconic Neck Lookout; went to the famous local honey and handmade chocolate fudge factory and enjoyed a delicious lunch at Pennicott’s beachside restaurant with sweeping views of Adventure Bay.

⬇️ These are just some random pics taken on my random walks around the dock. Just walking around and sitting by the dock watching the water, the view and the sunset was my way of relaxing after a busy shift.

⬇️ This is the compilation of some of my favourite spots for food. At Willie Smith I tried some of the best local apple cider that Tasmania had to offer and their cheeseboard was also worth the money. I would recommend the fresh baked croissants and cruffins from Queens Bakery and Pigeon Whole Bakery. Every Saturday and Sunday they have Salamanca Market and farm market where you can support the locals by buying organic fruits, vegetables, dairy products, honey, wine tonic etc. or support small food businesses. Da Angelo Ristorante has the best Italian cuisines but you need to make sure to book before you go as they are always booked out, but their homemade pizza and pasta are top notch. Farzi for breakfast or brunch with friends and there are so many other options to explore when it comes to good food and drinks.

⬇️ We went for a full day hike up to the Hartz Mountain and the view was spectacular. And this one was on New Year’s Day. I felt so grateful to get to experience all these experiences.

6. What advice would you tell other Nurses who want to do travel nursing?

My advice to any nurse considering travel nursing is to definitely give it a go at least once—it’s an experience you won’t regret, and before you know it, you’ll be signing up for more contracts! Travel nursing is not only a fantastic way to earn well and explore new places, but it also supports both personal and professional growth. It offers the chance to connect with new people, learn about different cultures, and, if you’re a foodie like me, explore amazing new spots with incredible food and drinks. Ultimately, it’s about creating lasting memories, enjoying life, and finding a true work-life balance.
