RN Tony
5 years nursing experience
We all have that one favourite place where we find ourselves travelling to over and over again. The one you daydream about and count down the time (and count up the savings) for your next visit.
But for RN Tony, such a place is right where he got contracted to work with at Affinity.
Tasmania is very popular with nurses and midwives, and for good reason! If you’re into a bit of hiking, climbing, nibbling some fine food or scouting out terrific vistas, Australia’s tiny state delivers in spades. In this Spotlight, we hear from Tony about the hidden gems of Tassie, as well as his other travels in the Northern Territory.
1. How long have you been nursing for?
I started nursing in 2019, so into my 5th year now. Definitely doesn’t feel that long.
2. How has your time been at The Royal Hobart Hospital and the Mersey Community Hospital?
I’m now on my third contract at The Royal which probably says a lot about how much I enjoy both the hospital and the city. Every ward I’ve worked on has had a great team to work with. There’s also so much to do not far from Hobart and in the town itself.
Couldn’t recommend Mersey enough if you want a taste of North-West Tasmania. A far more relaxed lifestyle at work and I loved having Cradle Mountain right on my doorstep.
3. What have you gotten up to in Tasmania?
I love the outdoors and I think that’s one of the big draws about coming to Tassie. I’ve managed to get around Cradle Mountain a fair bit and managed to see the frozen waterfall at Meander falls during the winter. Have also spent a bit of time island hopping and exploring places like Bruny Island and Mariah Island since being down in the south.
I’ve also been lucky enough to be in places here where I can enjoy more of my hobbies like mountain biking and rock climbing that I haven’t had a chance to do on other contracts.
4. What do you enjoy most about the travel nurse lifestyle?
I think the opportunity to go to places that I otherwise wouldn’t have ever traveled to and spend some quality time there is my favourite part about the travel nursing lifestyle. Researching a new contract location and all the things to do there has become a favourite ritual before starting a job.
5. You are currently on your 8th placement with us – what has been the highlight of working with Affinity so far?
Affinity has sent me to some amazing places, with the highlight being Alice Springs. But on top of that I think the team have made it so easy to have this as a full time gig, especially my placement specialist Emma. Affinity have really looked after me.
6. You have taken many awesome photos – do you have a favourite shot? What’s the story behind it?
I don’t think I could pick one but if I had to choose it would be the view looking out to the West McDonnell Ranges in the NT. We had been searching for a swimming hole for most of the day but had been turned around at every turn by bush fires sweeping through. In the end we settled for watching the sunset over the great Aussie outback.
7. What advice would you give to other nurses who want to do travel nursing?
There’s so much freedom with travel nursing to make your life look the way you want. Make sure you make the most of that!
