Making her way through just about the whole of Australia over the last 3 years, RN/RM Annie has made some of the best connections and learnings as a dual nurse and midwife.
Whatever bucket list item that’s on your list, Annie has probably done it! Here’s what the travelling RN/RM life has been like for her.
1. How has your time in VIC been?
I did my nursing and midwifery training in Victoria, so it’s been really nice working with familiar paperwork and online systems again. I am also only a couple of hours drive away from family and friends 🤗
2. What have you gotten up to in Geelong?
So far in Geelong, I have been to the Otway’s National Park for a couple of hikes, as well as the You Yangs. I have plans to drive down the Great Ocean Road with another agency staff member, and of course, find the local bars and coffee.
3. What kind of differences have you seen with living & working in rural locations?
I definitely had to up skill since working regionally, especially regarding maternity. I am now competent in skills I wouldn’t have otherwise had the opportunity to have had I stayed tertiary.
4. What do you enjoy most about the travel nurse/midwife lifestyle?
There are so many things I love about being a travelling nurse! I have worked and lived in parts of Australia I never thought I would, and made friends that I still talk to regularly.
I have flown over the horizontal waterfalls in WA and caught a helicopter over the islands of the Torres Strait. I’ve snorkeled with turtles on the Great Barrier Reef and hiked overnight at Cradle Mountain!
On my current contract in Geelong, I am working with a midwife I met in Launceston, and obstetrician I worked with in Broome. I could honestly go on and on…😁
5. You are on your 10th placement with us! What has been the highlight working with Affinity so far?
All of the above plus more.
6. What is a favourite photo you have taken? What’s the story behind it?
My favourite photo is of me at the Shinju Matsuri sunset dinner on cable beach!
I had a great group of friends in Broome – we ate and drank amazing food and wine while watching the sunset and listening to a local Aboriginal band.
I was definitely in my happy place!
7. What advice would you give other nurses who want to start travel nursing or midwifery?
Say yes to everything! Take your own pillow or linen (if you can) and ask questions. The past 3 years have honestly been some of my best yet.
Travel nursing and midwifery will take you anywhere you say yes to! If you’re waiting for a sign to start agency work this season… this is it!
