Meet RN Mell: Small State, Big Adventures

RN Mell

5 years nursing experience

Based in QLD for many years, RN Mell swapped the tropical sunshine state to ‘come down for air’ in Tasmania in May last year.

Since then, she’s loved hiked aplenty, and taken 1.5hr trips for mouthwatering oysters, worthy of envy for any seafood lover!

Staying through Summer and Winter in this cosy state, here’s how Tassie life has been for her!

1. How has your time been in Tassie?

It has been amazing and so surreal! My husband and I are travelling in our caravan, which is such a life-changing experience.

2. What have you gotten up to in George Town?

The area is laid back and quiet here but there are some lovely places to visit.

The Low Head lighthouse has a foghorn that is turned on at 12pm every Sunday. Every month there is a car show for lovers of classic cars. There are lots of waterfalls and great short walks to explore.

3. What is a key learning you’ve made with living and working in a rural location?

You need to be flexible and able to adapt and change to the facilities you’re working in as they all run differently.

4. What do you enjoy most about the travel nurse lifestyle?

The ability to see different cities and towns, and meet all the amazing people who live there, as well as exploring the environment and finding hidden gems!

5. You are on your 2nd placement with us – what has been the highlight working with Affinity so far?

Other than being able to meet so many new and amazing nurses on my contracts, the staff at Affinity have listened and been very patient with me and just as invested in my “next” contracts as me!

6. You’ve taken many beautiful photos! Do you have a favourite shot? What’s the story behind it?

Technically I didn’t take this photo but it’s on one of the many hikes I’ve been able to do here in Tassie!

It’s the Pelion Plains in the Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park.

7. What advice would you give other nurses who want to do travel nursing?

DO IT NOW!!!!! Don’t wait!!

Make it work for you and just get out and explore what this amazing country has to offer and all the fabulous people you’ll meet along the way!!
